I can't seem to build a magma forge, smelter, or glass furnace. I have the room dug out, and a square channeled over magma. I have a bunch of andesite, and I was under the impression that I could use that to build them. But I don't even have an option to build any of those. I get a bad feeling that I'm forgetting something simple. What am I doing wrong?

Did you use a utility like Reveal to find the magma?  Did you get a "You have a discovered a magma pool/pipe" notification?  Is the fortress a reclaimed one?

I did use Reveal... did that screw things up?

You have to get the magma pipe notification.

The "You have discovered a magma pipe/pool" message is what enables building of magma furnaces and forges. This message occurs when you reveal a square that has magma in it. By using Reveal, you've made it so there are no hidden magma squares for you to reveal; thus, you can't trigger the message and can't make the buildings.

It's generally recommended to use Reveal on a backup copy of the fortress, and just remember where things are placed. Don't use Reveal for your "real" fortress.

In a word: yes. I believe you need to get the notification for all of those hidden things. Or they need to be uncovered at the beginning of your fort. Those hidden things include: chasm, bottomless pit, underground lake and river, magma pipe/pool and HFS. Although only 'useful' for magma and HFS, it's also needed for he Dungeon Master to arrive at your fort if you don't have a river/brook. I'm fairly sure about this, but do note that I can be mistaken.

There used to be a companion utility for reveal called "Magma Buildings" that fixed this particular bug for you by granting you access to magma buildings post-reveal, not sure if it's been updated for the 40d or 40d# versions.

If you found/downloaded it thru the Wiki, there is a warning there to that effect. Other places too.

If you didn't save a copy of the world (as suggested in those many warnings), you'll have to re-gen the world. There are many threads here describing how to do that.
