Just like doors except are are longer and possibly thicker. Can be attached to levers and maybe pressure plates.

90° turned drawbridges, basically. Except that these should require hinges (i.e. mechanisms), and drawbridges should at least require ropes or chains to pull them up.

Gates would be cool. It'd be better if gates and bridges required power to open and close. Water and wind or possibly in the future livestock (or many dwarves) on a capstan.

You know, once you add enough mechanisms, someone will build a fortress that is also a working galleon.
