Don't they still do that?


And damn, stockpile specification...  I'd forgotten about that...  After playing the newer versions for a while, you just sort of take it for granted. 

Or when chasms were infinite rat spawners?

Actually, I kind of regarded that as a plus.  Makes things a little more interesting, even if it does just mean stationing some brain-damaged twit with a sword out by the chasm.  And it was possible to nuke the thing anyways, if you really wanted to.

Now we just get pre-nuked chasms, and the stragglers are have to be rescued before they can be slaughtered.  That's just sad.
