Mountain falls down a single z-level, flattening anything under it but not really collapsing into a pile of rubble.

Still an awesome deathtrap, though.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

You can always pre-carve a statue inside the mountain, then set off the supports, and the whole thing crumbles into a fully crafted statue. Minimize the work to make something epic.

Hell, you can engrave on it as well. I even tested the methods while doing an alternative method to quarrying, and discovered it by accident.

Basically What I did that I (anyone) discovered *facepalm*:
#        #       #        #
# ###### #  Be-  #        #
# ###### #  fore # ###### #
# ###### # <--   # ###### #
# ###### #       # ###### #
# ###### # After # ###### #
# ###### #  -->  # ###### #
#   I    #       # ###### #
##########       ##########

My modifications to the plan (discovery):
#        #       #        #
# ______ #  Be-  #        #
# __I___ #  fore #        #
# __I___ # <--   #        #
# __I_#_ #       #        #
# ___#__ # After #        #
# __##__ #  -->  #    #   #
#   I    #       #   ###  #
##########       ##########

And how this can be applied:
#    #   #       #        #
# #####_ #  Be-  #    #   #
# #      #  fore # #####  #
# ###### # <--   # #      #
#      # #       # ###### #
# _##### # After #      # #
# ___#__ #  -->  #  ##### #
#    I   #       #    #   #
##########       ##########

In theory, it could work. Provided the carving doesn't break on impact, or levitated parts don't break off. Then again, you can always carve more solidly. Obelisks can be easier to construct and not foul up, of course.

You can carve from bridges extending from the walls, requiring less scaffolding.

The levitated parts will break off.  They'll fall until they hit another unmined section.

Megaproject idea: Cave-in Tetris. Can you form 4 whole lines in a single quarry?

What I'm wondering is, will

burn down supports?  And if so, could you make one looong collapsing hall like this, supported by a lone support at the far end, and crush the whole pack at once?
