Word relationships: related and opposed
« on: May 12, 2009, 05:40:59 am »

Two new types of tags/tokens for language_words.txt to indicated relationships between words.  One would indicate that two words are very similar or related, which can be used to avoid battle names  like "The Conflict of Battles", or names like "Iceglacier" or "Icy Glacier".  The other would indicate that two words are opposing/conflicting, which would have two uses:

  • Artifacts names can have a small chance of conflicting words, for the sake of coolness ("Iceflame").
  • Make compound "of noun" phrases from pairs of opposing words, like "The Something of Fire and Ice" or "The Something of Night and Day".

Synonym/antonym lists could make preferences and conversations more... spicy.  Though they would be frustrating to update for modders.

You could even have in-game legends which 'decay' - after a certain amount of time, one civilization will know a hero by one name, where another will know him by a similar name.  Or less-intelligent races might dumb things down using syn/ant lists to choose a similar word to describe the same thing.

Yeah, the current dictionary system isn't really... scalable.  I'm trying to find some kind of freeware dictionary/thesaurus plugin thing or whatever, because obviously people have made big lists of words before and hopefully the game could just make use of that.

Converting a thesaurus into DF's format would be the best possible thing to do I think.  I've given it a shot in the past, but ran into file-format issues... namely that I couldn't figure out the thesaurus's file format at all.
