Okay, what kind of video card do you have exactly?

Yea, there are four mirrors on the site that you can download from.

My graphics card is a Radeon 9800 Pro 128mem

No anti-virus or anything like that is running when I try.

ATI has finicky drivers.

You never modded it or changed anything in init.txt?

I believe a DXDiag may be useful to us here (in addition to graphics it gives a lot of the little details that may show the causes of problems).

I googled and got good directions on doing a DXDiag: http://www.dartfish.com/en/media-gallery/faq/how-can-i-make-a-dxdiag-diagnostic-file.htm

However, skip the last step, and instead, copy-paste it into some [spoiler] tags and post.

Or, copy-paste it to http://pastebin.com/ and provide us the link.

Perhaps you should try out the omega driver? [Sorry I don't know too much about the ATI video cards...]

Here's the dxdiag, though most of the info won't be relevant... I think.

dxdiag

Incidentally, I had a really nice fortress going on my laptop this weekend, at least in my mind, and I made the mistake of not saving. My boyfriend shut down my lappy the next day when we were ready to leave and I lost everything. :(

Think you have enough hard drives there?  As for running the game, try out an earlier version like .39f and see if it runs. Or maybe throw it onto the main drive and try running it from there.  I have a 9800 pro that has never had any problems running dwarf fortress, so try rolling back the driver and seeing what happens (you can always re-update the driver).

Really though, why do you need 3 hds for?

Well, I have two physical HDs, just the master is partitioned. I was going to throw Linux on the smaller partition, but I never got around to it.

I was running out of space recently so I bought a 500gb and slaved it, mostly to save myself the trouble of having to reformat.

Tried 39 and 38, both wouldn't work. I'm extraordinarily hesitant to roll back my drivers, because it could affect other games I play. Also, I'm positive there's more to it than just installing older drivers, I can't really remember how to do it without mucking things up. :/

Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager->Display Drivers->Your Video Card->Driver->Roll Back Driver

All you would have to do is reinstall the latest drivers if it doesn;t work, sounds simple for someone who was planning to use Linux  :P

The open-source linux Radeon driver works with 9800, and runs 40d11 perfectly. :D

..however, DF is currently slower on Linux than Windows, barring extreme driver issues with the latter. I'm working on it.

Also, visit http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=28841.msg368383#msg368383 and run glview according to the instructions. This gives a lot more useful information than dxdiag, since DF doesn't *use* directx.

Rolling back the drivers removed the error messages, but the game just doesn't run.

I tried downloading the OpenGL thing and got these errors when running it:

Code: [Select]
System.AccessViolationException: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.
  at openlex.Win32.oevClientInitialize()
  at openlex.oevDetect.backgroundWorker1_DoWork(Object sender, DoWorkEventArgs e)

and

Code: [Select]
ERROR: OpenGL Internal Error
Code -4, GL Content creation error

1) Have you tried installing it onto a different HD?  (As my "state the obvious" question.)

2) Did you check your physical RAM?  Maybe part of that needs to be replaced.  (As in, open the computer, take out the RAM and see if there's any indication some of it has been damaged.  At the very least, you can blow all the dust off.)

I've tried both physical HDs. As for the RAM, I have a mem test I can do that will check for corruption much better than my eyes could. I'll run that, but I haven't noticed any problems similar to the time I did have corrupted RAM.

Edit: I'll run the test later tonight, busy working on stuff now, and it takes 20 mins with nothing else up.

GLView doesn't even run? Well, that's..

Your windows is broken. :P

Instead of rolling back drivers you could try reinstalling them, but it's pretty clear that your installation of windows just won't allow an opengl application to work.

Either that, or you need to do it as root.
