Deep Fried Goblins - An idea for a new trap
« on: May 07, 2009, 08:49:43 pm »

I was roaming the web today when I came across this article.

The point I picked up on was the place was an underground city which had holes made to drop hot on invading enemies.

Now I know that magma is usually the weapon of choice when it comes to this, but for maps with no magma where it would take to long to pipe it through, having the option to drop hot oil/acid onto invading goblins and/or trading elves would be great.

Side View:

######^#####

C = Cauldron
* = Hole in floor
# = Floor
^ = Pressure plate

So as a goblin walks past he triggers the pressure plate, sending gallons of burning oil upon them. Alternatively you could link it a lever.

+ Points
  • You could make small room in your fortress to house the cauldron of oil without having to worry about making pipes for magma.
  • Reduced risk of flooding your fortress from magma
  • Fast to trigger
  • Fast setup (good for first year forts)

- Points
  • Have to be refilled after use
  • Only have a small area of effect (although in some cases this is a good thing)
  • Have to use material for refilling

First ten minutes of play I ate my loincloth and then got some limbs torn off by a super friendly rat. Thumbs up from me.

As you noted, we can already do this with magma. Once other fluids are added to the game, you'll be able to make appropriate traps using them as well. There's no need to add a special-purpose building when the general-purpose building blocks are more than sufficient.

irl, I believe the hot dump of choice was sand - cheaper than oil for most people given the time period. ;)

WELCOME TO FUCKING BAY12!
 - not only do they have the weapons, they also have the Fortresses -
I have noticed a rather mixed reaction with microcline, but what do people think of olivine?
Oh I love olivine.  I think dark green furniture makes the fortress tasteful.
Wait, what?

Perhaps this could be a military job? Set some grates above a tunnel as a killing zone, activate it and dwarves will man it holding lye, pitch, sand and all that fun stuff.
