The technology exists, its just highly abstracted right now. If you put a mill next to the river, obviously there is a waterwheel or something generating power.

One thing i suggested a long time ago was the gathering of mechanical energy from various sources and applying that to other mechanisms around your fortress.

This would mean stuff like:
1. Waterwheels linked to inland mills through a seperate "drive train"
2. Attaching counterweights to retractable doors to make them easier to raise and lower.
3. River dams.
4. Using counterweights to reset traps. Say a stone block fell, a counterweight then pulls it back up, the stone drops again, another counterweight pulls it up and so on. This would keep going untill there are no more set counterweights and you would have to raise them again.
