How about this: If an item is tagged to be melted from the stock screen, and it is currently being worn or held by a dwarf, the dwarf will drop the item ( and go find another piece of equipment to pick up that isn't tagged to be melted ). This will make upgrading your military dwarves' armor a lot easier

I dunno, I kinda like it this way so I don't accidentally melt all the axes my carpenters are using or the captains of the guard's pants.

They just need to set material level for equipment, and make dwarves actually remove worn clothing correctly and it's not really a problem anymore IMO.
