My dwarves gave a resident gremlin a name.

I go a message saying "The dwarves have given a resident gremlin the name Oddom Kollogem". Have any of you gotten this message?

It's a dwarven two-part name, rather than the one-part name given to creatures who kill stuff.
However, this could also be a bug, because I know there is a bottomless pit and a chasm on my map, but I haven't discovered them yet.

This just happens with some types of creatures, they also give cave swallowmen names.

I've seen in other threads that naming is apparently partly linked to creature age... if they've been in your environment for a long time, they get named because your dwarves are used to them being there.  (Even if the dwarves have never actually SEEN them....)

I recently had my dwarves name five batmen, and the log messages popped up one after the other pretty much instantaneously so the age thing makes sense to me.  Apart from breaching the chasm they're in and then immediately sealing it off, nobody has interacted with them.

On the other hand, the bottom of the chasm has a bunch of troglodytes in it, and they haven't been named.  I wonder what the logic behind it all is?

Naming a critter is just a recognition that it's somehow significant, even if it's not a big threat.  (Altho' creatures that have killed will often get names.)

If the gremlin can, it will get into your fortress and pull levers.  Hunt it down.  With extreme prejudice.

This is purely speculation, but I'd bet there's also a distance factor -- you give pet names to critters that are in your backyard, not ones that are in the next town over.  I'd bet the nameless trogs are too far away to be within the fortress "area of effect" but your bats and/or gremlins are within a specified range.

This might be true. Make a pit next to them and put some dorf in it. Throw down food and drink once in awhile and see if it does anything.

I speculate that it has something to do with them having [CAN_LEARN] or [CAN_SPEAK]. This theory utterly falls apart considering that ratmen or lizardmen don't get named by dwarves.
