Fruits and fruit trees/bushes
« on: October 20, 2006, 08:18:00 am »

are plump helmets the only plants now?
it seems that in DF there are things that makes DF well... unrealistic. I could live at least with 1 type of fruit trees but having none makes hard life. in every game with fruits I always depend on them.

Toady could you please make those trees grow apples? at least...

There are several edible fruits/mushrooms/seeds/fruits in the game.
But you need to get/buy/farm them :-)
Go to the game wiki and search about them

or, you know, designate the entire outside area for a "gather plants" activity, and see what your farmers pickup.

I tend to think that dwarves don't cultivate such plants because it just doesn't occur to them that they might need sunlight.

Need sunlight? That's crazy talk.

In fact, I imagine them attempting to cultivate them by bringing them into the cave.  When they die, they figure they must only grow outside.  So to help the ones outside grow, they build a huge contraption that blocks out the sun.

And the fickle things still die! Bah.

Actually, plump helmets are likely a form of edible fungus -- which is why it doesn't need sunlight to grow. (the text character it has also looks like a mushroom; as do pig tails and sweet pods)

Right.  I was talking about the reason they don't cultivate apples and so forth.

I already knew that plump helmets are fungus
but pig tails and sweet pods and even cave whet i always though that they are normal plants. nevermind lets wait for toady to make apples because plump helmet booze is too much for me (who sane person excluding dwarfs whould drink that?)

Ahh, apple trees outside would definitely kick ass, but it seems more like a human /elf farming technique then dwarven.

Yeast is a fungus (or was it a bacteria?) and it's used to ferment drinks. As long as the yeast is removed, there's no issues.   ;)
