Needing some help with pump operations.
« on: May 04, 2009, 08:14:06 pm »

I'm trying to pump some magma from a magma pipe to the surface. The start of the magma pipe is 3 z-levels underground. My first screw-pump is directly over the pool on the z-level above it, and the following screw pumps are stacked on each z-level above it pumping from opposite directions. I've got 4 windmills hooked up to them from the surface, and each of them (screw pumps) are fully powered. When I power on the screw-pumps the magma is not being pumped upward. Is this because the start of an underground magma pipe isn't 7/7 liquid, but only the surface of it? This may prevent the pumps from bringing the magma up from that level? Or have I completely mcgrubbled the whole setup somehow?

Sounds like you need one more pump below your existing assembly. The top z-level of the revealed pipe is open space, not magma.

Now for some fun/good-chance-of-terrible-death with magma!

I'm having fun learning to deal with magma myself. Dug a big reservoir for magma, and when it was half full designated a rhyolite stockpile for an outdoor building. Guess where they went for rhyolite? One even made it all the way back up into the main hall where his corpse burned for a bit.

<d, b, f> is your friend.  Can use the keys to designate huge squares, or pick and choose with a mouseclick.

<d, b, +...

f = forbid
c = reclaim forbidden object (sounds so mysterious....)
d = dump
D = cancel dump

few things to check:

are the pumps oriented correctly? particularly the bottom one since it sounds like you're not moving any magma at all. 'q' over it and see which direction it's drawing from.

is the lowest pump directly above the level containing the magma? this could also be your problem. the 'k' tool is your friend here, check the tile behind the pump (should say open space), then go 1 level down. if it still says open space, then you need to extend your operation another level down.

works:
Code: (side view) [Select]
   -> WW Walls, ->screwpump
mmmWWWWW magma

doesn't work:
Code: (side view) [Select]
   -> WW Walls, ->screwpump
   WWWWW
mmmWWWWW magma

something to be aware of: liquid doesn't have a 'surface' really. a tile is either occupied by some liquid on a z level, or it's empty. directly above a block of 7/7 water or magma is simply Open space, without 'floor' tile like rock has (unless the water freezes into ice, or the magma becomes obsidian)

funny thing about that.. I immediately went and did a mass forbid of all the stone in that area - and as I went down the z-levels I realized.. There's no rhyolite there! It must have been an illicit rendezvous by the magma lake.

I put a large Restricted traffic area <d, o> around and towards my lake on the surface - no go!

The area took some carving to get right (didn't want a rectangle), but they don't go anywhere near it unless they have very specific business, and then I take additional precautions.
