Creating / importing sand
« on: April 27, 2009, 01:27:22 pm »

Is is possible to make a reaction for making sand from stone?

Is it possible to make caravans bring sand?

I don't think either can be done. However, you can cheat easily by adding [SOIL_SAND] to whatever layer of soil you've got. That way, you can zone it as a sand gathering area and you still will have sand.

Another way is using a utility like Tweak's tile changing tool and just change a tile to sand.

There's a bug where letting tower caps grow on rock (might only be obsidian) has the chance to turn the tile into a sand tile. I've also seen this happen with constructions on rough obsidian but I can't vouch for it since I'm not entirely sure how often it happens. I've only had it happen on a few maps but it tended to consistently turn the constructed tiles into the same type of sand.

I'll do some testing and get back to you before tomorrow (probably)

Yes, but then reactions can make most things you just have to figure out how.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

No, caravans will not bring you sand, glass or rough gems of any kind.

I've spent some time working on this problem for my MMO mod (in progress), and unfortunately, it's not completely solvable.

You can make the PRODUCTS of glassworking (ie rough glass gems, blocks, etc.), but you cannot make bags of unprocessed sand. I've added reactions to my mod that allow you to make the most common/necessary items (raw glass, windows, vials), but the rest requires either more reactions OR an actual sand source.

Ah, thanks.  I'd tried something like that but got the reaction syntax wrong.  I'll use your version (and add a couple more for chert and flint, as they're mostly silica too).

Btw, is there any particular reason why you added pearlash as a reagent?

If you don't have obsidian I know that rock salt will also produce some type of soil if you mess with constructions on top of it or crave down stairs into it. There are supposed to be some other materials that tend to turn into sand as well but everyone who says that won't give me a list :<

Edit: I can add Chert to the list while Alunite remains worthless alunite.
Edit^2: Rather than rocksalt and chert I think this just works with any layer of stone that was right below ice, or that the mined ice from- maybe the squares where water would freeze.
