Vetrinarians but no doctors
« on: September 03, 2007, 10:44:00 am »

An idle thought while setting labors on a batch of immigrants.  I go back and forth between having the "Health Care" labor turned on for every dwarf and having one dwarf who only (or mostly) does Health Care and I customize his/her profession name to "Nurse".

A dwarf who has the "Animal Care" labor turned on (and injured pets) will gain skill as an Animal Caretaker.

I'd like it if something comparable could be done for dwarf health care, and my designated "Nurse" could gain skill as a doctor, medic, nurse, sawbones, chirurgeon, or candy striper.

With the new release, Toady said that he is rewriting completely the use of nobles. You'll be able to appoint them yourself now, and they'll be able to work in your fortress just like a normal dwarf.

Having a 'nurse' or 'doctor' noble could be great.  :)

Ooooh!  I love the idea of nobles changing bed pans.

Well, when you think about it old village doctors were considered very highly by all the villagers, if not because he was the only person competent in the place for doctor duties, because he probably saved at least one person per family in the course of his work.

Thus, it would make sense to have a doctor in the fortress acting as a low noble.

Absolutely. From medicine men through cardiologists, physicians have always been held in high regard. It makes sense it's a noble doing it. Especially since it requires a degree of education too.
