the air speed of an unladen war dog
« on: October 15, 2006, 11:39:00 pm »

I have recently observed, while studying some unwitting demihumans, that my ravenous war dogs prefer to rip the arms off first and then disembowel the remainder of the test subject. This is a particularily delicious prospect when they're used for theft deterrance, though it might work better if at least one armless kobold were allowed to escape in order to live out the rest of its pathetic days as a horrible reminder to the others.

Nonetheless, while the situation is already fairly satisfactory from the carnage standpoint, I am dismayed that my war dogs of doom cannot move faster than the kobolds, giving rise to the peculiar situation where a kobold might get away unscathed despite being pursued by a bloodthirsty throng of my finest canine warriors.

I propose that, since kobolds move at the same speed as dwarves and dwarves are not olympic gold-medal holders in any track and field events that I'm aware of, the bastard in the image above should be overtaken in short order and torn to pieces.

You can make dogs faster in the raws.  Go to the creature_domestic.txt (or however it's named) and give dogs [SPEED:800] or some such thing.  This makes them attack faster too though, which is why I haven't done much to differentiate movement speeds yet.

That's unfortunate; I guess I'll just have to learn to live with my 'fat' war dogs for the time being.

BTW, that kobold was eventually caught and ripped to pieces as it hesitated at the edge of the map. Chunk of kobold, anyone?

I've noticed that "agile" (and even more agile) dwarves move faster.  Would it be possible to give all dogs "agile" (or whatever-the-next-one-up is)?

That's pretty much the same as adding [SPEED:800] to the dog file.  The Agile stats affect how quickly they gain "movement points" and the [SPEED=#] affects how many "movement points" the critter needs to do something.  Defaults are 1000.

Wardogs have more HP/attack than normal dogs right? maybe hunting dogs should have extra speed...
