It may be the dwarvenly way, but by using supports and stuff you're making the execution needlessly complicated. Simple modification to your plan:

Get a miner to channel the tile highlighted in orange after you've dug out the entire pit, the whole thing goes crashing down. People often use a support to remotely crash the building so their miner doesn't get caught in the destruction...but if the thing's crashing 10+ levels down, the miner shouldn't be caught by the cave-in dust cloud, so you've got nowt to worry 'bout ;)

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

I once had a collection of mountian gnome cages on a constructed floor over a lava pipe. Thinking there would be no danger, I asked my favourite armourer to remove the floor tile connecting it to the land.
One giant cloud of dust and magma mist later, the stunned armourer is burning to death in the bottom of a magma pipe. I wouldn't have changed a thing.

Cave In dust is actually created by falling, not impacting, and it will happily suck miners in after it.

Even so...

Try and find a location with 3-4 towns next to each other and try it then... You could build a mind-bogglingly hugenormous tower!

I don't think such a location exists.

Well, the support method could always still work, however, if you want to multi-destruct, it can still somewhat be applied. The lack of floors on both ends prevent the "prisoners" from escaping their place (then again, carving away the path out the door also helps).

Anyway, if anyone feels like leveling an entire city simultaneously (but still retaining land), you can always apply this to all targeted buildings, and flip the lever to take them all out. Hold the town ransom.

Modified plans (support-wise):

(Thanks, indirectly, for telling me about tt, works better than code :smacks forehead:  :P)

I got another interesting idea, It's a method of execution-cave-in that only destroys the interior of buildings, allowing for easier salvage of buildings (especially towers). However, doing this to dark towers may prove a bit challenging, but possible.
