Assigned Dogs at a Glance
« on: September 02, 2007, 04:19:00 am »

It'd be nice if it were easier to keep track of who has how many/which dogs or other animals assigned to them at a glance. At present the only way I can think of to figure out who owns which war dogs is to just follow them around and try to see if a dog is following them. Not very efficient or effective  :( I like the idea of being able to assign a single dog to every soldier so not knowing which guys have them already or not makes doing this a pain without doubling up or running out of dogs early >_<

I tend to do the same thing to important dwarves and military. Gets confusing once a dog dies and you have to figure out who's now a dog short, so I'm all for your suggestion.

Yes.  I also think that a 'work dogs' screen, like the 'animals' screen, would be really useful for seeing how dogs are assigned fortress-wide.  Even adding them to the animals screen might be okay, but they're important enough to deserve a menu of their own IMO.

The intruder arose, casting off its black cloak.  "Behold, stunted jesters!  It is I, Scuro!"  A jagged scar marked the goblin's face from eye to chin, his greasy mane gray and wild, and about his neck was the broken silver amulet, strapped together by a leather band.

It would also be helpful if we could assign dogs to a specific job.

Say, "escorting herbalists" was a job for a dog. Now the dog isnt smart enough to seek out active herbalists, but what it would mean is that any herbalist about to head out and harvest would go to the cage, let the dog out and get it to follow him.

This way one dog can cover many dwarves instead of only one.

That's a pretty good idea Tamren. Made me think how practical a guardpost would be though. When somebody is doing something you deem dangerous, ie: go through door X, go outside etc, then they would first stop at the guardpost to pick up an escort in the form of a dog or guard.
