Well I was thinking that you might be able to dig with your hands(slow), spoon(medium, giant spoons count as spade) or a spade(fastest in dirt).

And a power goal:
You have been put in jail, use a spoon or your hands to dig a tunnel through the unwatched corner near the wall and dump it on the plump helmet patch, optionally cover the tunnel entrance with foliage.

Req539, UNDIGNIFIED DIGGING, (Future): Somebody wanted to dig in the dirt without picks. It's not very dwarven, but I suppose it could be allowed.

But I agree, should take longer too.
