I want my fire!!!
« on: April 24, 2009, 02:58:58 pm »

Now, I know that, if I can manage to find my magma, fire is easy to get.  However, I haven't the slightest idea where my magma pipe is.  The problem is that I want fire, and I want it now.

How can I burn these buggers without a magma-triggered flame?  I want to see some suffering.........

what type of stone do you have? the ground near a magma pipe is usually obsidian, if you find that then dig down 2 z-levels

I think it'd be better to just throw him in a pit.
By pit I mean "ledge designated as pit some 30 levels above the ground water magma" and that would,as they say be the end of that.
Unless a sword/axedwarf gets to 'em.. then it's rhesus pieces...

Dig stairs straight down from the center of every local area tile (they are 48x48).  You are almost guaranteed to hit the pipe if you're in the right tile, and your miner won't fall in or anything.

You can't make fire without magma, a magma-based creature like a fire imp or magma man, or a dragon. Or modding. Guess which one of these is your best bet.

You could always try modding in a thermonuclear catsplosion for your fire. Or you can try and hit admantine, hope you get SoF, and knock one or two out with a cave in and catch them in a cage trap. Or you can find your magma pipe...those are your options in a nutshell. Oh, and the dragon, but beware-fires caused by dragonfire still burn them.

 SOF melt bauxite.
 Fear them.

But really, just dig around for the magma pipe. You will need to mess about with screws to get the stuff to the surface.

If its a magma pipe and its not immediately obvious from the surface, I recommend doing your exploration on the bottom most level. Whenever you hit warm rock, you've found the magma pipe. Then you can dig out some more to find out where it actually is before making a single tunnel to it at the top level.

Dig thru stone when you can just walk to the location on the surface? Wow - a real dwarf.

Dig stairs straight down from the center of every local area tile (they are 48x48).  You are almost guaranteed to hit the pipe if you're in the right tile, and your miner won't fall in or anything.

This is the way.  Shouldn't be more than 5 levels down at the most.

Magma is usually about 25 tiles across, so hard (but not impossible) for a pipe/pool to hide in its 48x48 area tile.   ~IF~ you don't hit from the center tile, then you have more work to do - dig 4 additional shafts about 12 from each center shaft in 4 directions - N, S, E & W (or diagonally, same same).

If you noted where the magma was on the embark screen, that makes it a LOT easier.
