Infirmary
« on: September 01, 2007, 06:46:00 am »

I noticed that the way injuries works right now is kind of basic and uneffective. I have some ideas...

Infirmary
I think it would be a good idea to add a new infirmary room. Injured dwarves would be brought here to rest in a bed instead of in the barracks/their room. This way you could make it more convinient by placing a well and food nearby.

More useful health care labor
A dwarf that is skilled at health care would actually speed up recovery of light to medium wounds by visiting and caring for each patient every once in a while. This would also reduce the chance of wounded dwarves becoming depressed and having emotional breakdowns.

Surgery
Dwarves skilled a health care can perform some surgery/advanced health care, for example fixate a broken limb or amputate a mangled limb.

Pregnacies
Pregnant dwarves should go to the infirmary to give birth and maybe even have to spend some time there recovering. Infants could have to spend their first days there.

Medecine
You should be able to make salves and medicine from some plants, herbs and animals. This could be done in the Alchemist's Laboratory/Mill/Farmer's Workshop or even in the infirmary itself by an health care expert. Some salves could for example be used to treat burnt dwarves.

Just some ideas, what do you think?

Great ideas, except for:

On some primitive island a few hundred years ago (I read it in a book and forgot some details), when it was time to give birth, the mother would stop work and take an hour or two to do it, then return to work with no other effect than some time spent. The father would have all the pain associated with pregnancy. Weird society? Undeniably. Still, it shows that for a tough enough society, giving birth is not difficult or time-consuming, and I'd think dwarves would be tough enough. Plus, it saves CPU cycles!

Do you mean a workshop or a defined-from-furniture room? I personal think infirmarys/barracks should work like zoos/jails: it is a barracks that doesn't accept wounded dwarfs unless you enable "Used by health care" Same for sparring.

Good ideas, but they have been suggested at least 20 times already.

Yes, maybe that would make more sense in the dwarven society, perhaps they need no recovery time but they should still go there to give birth... The thought of a dwarven woman working in a field and suddenly popping a kid out in the dirt makes me cringe.

It would probably work best as a room defined from a bed, as you then could select the size of the room and number of beds yourself. You make a room from a bed then select "Used by health care" as you said.

How about when they're sparring in the barracks, or even in the middle of fighting a goblin siege? :P

Haven't we been through healthcare? I prefer the idea of a define-from-furniture ward, whereas things like a surgery, apotechary and other similar areas are more of a workshop thing.

This has been debated many times, lots of detail to cover!

This thread here is pretty old but should be a highly interesting read: http://www.bay12games.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=001008
