Goblin Drowning Chamber
« on: April 21, 2009, 10:52:38 am »

So I've build a goblin drowning chamber, and designated a pit above the chamber to drop the goblins into. The problem I'm having is that after 4-5 goblins get dropped in, my dwarves won't drop anymore in because as they get near the pit, they see the goblins in the pit and then get scared and run away.

Is there a way to prevent this?

If you want to get fancy, you could use flowing water to sweep the goblins from their landing spot in the pit to another location.

I thought about doing that, but it's not really practical at this point since I've already built the chamber and it's right in the middle of my fortress. I will definitely do that on my next fortress though.

If I make them drop a good distance down a shaft into the pit, will that solve the problem (at least temporarily)?

I tried the shaft idea and even something as small as 2 z-levels works like a charm. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Either do them in small batches, or make the pit deeper. A 1-square pit going a few Z-levels works fine.

If you can't be bothered to dig a channel, just dig out each Z-level you want, put a floor tile atop a support atop where you want the hole, lever it, and let 'er rip.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

I make deep shafts with various heights to toss gobbos off, depending on how dangerous they are and how sadastic I'm feeling. (The default height makes them immobile, but most survive it until I lower the dragon in from a 1-z drop) And yes, That's the best way to do it.
The shaft can have a stairway next to it no problem, as long as it doesn't extend all the way into the pit.

Personally, I don't think more z-levels will help.
That's just my opinion though, I once had miners getting scared of a zombie crocodile that was 5+ z levels above them. (they were clearing the entire map. :D )

If the pit is only one tile big you can put a floor hatch on it and dwarves wont be scared by whatever's under the hatch. They dont even open the hatch to drop stuff in as far as Im aware.

I have a setup with a 1 tile retracting bridge holding area 1 z-level below the pit with a hatch on it. I have about 20 goblins in that space but the dwarves dont seem scared at all.
