Dwarves ought to be able to teach each other, at least to some degree. I don't know how to implement it with civilian jobs, but militarily it could be simulated by a dwarf sparring with a more experienced dwarf, earning more experience in the appropriate skills (i.e. a novice swordsdwarf sparring with a master swordsdwarf will gain more Swords skill). There should be a certain level requirement -- i.e. the trainer must be 5 ranks above the trainee in order to gain the benefit -- and should be increased by a greater rank difference. It would be cool though; have that legendary axemaster to train those recruits that just arrived.

This has already popped up here and there in threads, so it's fitting it should get it's own thread. Maybe it has already earlier, but that doesn't mean everything has been said in the subject...

As for civilian training, there is the time-honoured system of apprenticeship.

You begin as apprentice to a craftsman, working your way up through menial tasks through actual work, at which point you take a test to be elevated to journeyman.

As journeyman you travel between different masters and work and study under them for several years until you are ready to take the test to be elevated to master.

After master I imagine it starts to shift from craftsmanship skill to political considerations, with lovely backstabbing and elbowing in the guild.

...and that would lead to interesting social events in the fortress, since the grandmasters are all viciously jealous of each other and all sorts of intrigues pop up.

Im sure they all get along just fine. They would only be super secretive when working on special projects like artifacts and such. Apprenticeship sounds great, it was suggested many times but the idea never really went anywhere.

Who decides what career they pick however? We already have perfect control over job prefferences. It would get annoying if you suddenly had 6 jeweler apprentices because it was the "cool" thing to do at the time.

Actually that sounds kinda interesting. If you have some really legendary jewelers, you'd definitely get more apprentices there. Ah, yes, those fickle youths.

Of course, since it takes very little time for the dwarves to become amazingly expert in a field, you can just make them switch to something else when they've grown into sensible adults.
