Liquids and fortifications
« on: April 19, 2009, 01:21:11 pm »

I know liquids flow through fortifications on the x and y axis, but I was wondering if anybody knows if they can flow through the z axis? I'm doubtful about flowing down, but what about up? If there's nothing above the fortifications, can liquid travel through it upwards? Has anybody tried this?

I would have to say no, if only because the floor still exists when there are fortifications, and even without the floor, well... I don't think the fortifications holes work that way.

Even solid objects can fall down and get stuck in fortifications that don't have floors built above them, so I assume that fluids will work.

 It is an interesting thought:
Fluids will enter the tile from above, because it does not create a floor tile above itself.
I have no clue if fluids will flow off the tile on the z-axis. Every object I drop onto a fortification does not drop through, so one could assume this is either because the object is 'stuck' in the tile because objects should not be there anyway, or there is a floor built underneath a fortification.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

i just tested this; water will not flow downward through a fortification (that is, if you channel a tile, build a fortification on the open space, and then let water flow onto the fortification, it will not flow to the space below the fortification).

i guess fortifications do create a solid 'floor' underneath them.

[edit] skimmed the initial post too fast, testing 'upward' flow now.

Is it a constructed or carved fortification?

Constructed fortifications do not have a ceiling. Carved fortifications, either from natural rock or from a constructed wall, do have ceilings.

Constructed fortifications do not have a ceiling. Carved fortifications, either from natural rock or from a constructed wall, do have ceilings.
That's because the only way to get rid of the ceiling would be to get rid of the place you're carving itself.

Can't the water flow diagonally up past the Fortification?

Water doesn't flow diagonally up or down.

Toady, how much of DF is inspired by Labyrinth? Is Armok actually David Bowie? Because that would simultaneously be disturbing and awesome.

If you carve the fortification out, there is still a ceiling, so no flow.  If you have channeled out the ceiling, then you have to construct the fortification where that channel hollowed out the tile below.

Fortification implies Floor but not Ceiling.

*victory dance*

how about digging a down stair over the carved fortification?
