Suggest me a new lapatopapon.
« on: April 22, 2009, 06:54:29 am »

Ok, I'm getting a tax rebate next month and my pay, and its my birthday. I've arranged to have my family members pay a little towards a laptop for university and so was wonder. What decent (gaming) laptop can i get in the region of £800-£1000 thats $1,172 - $1,465 in todays economic climate. My friends suggest an Asus brand, but I really have no idea. So I put it to you, what ones do you recommend?!

Well that isn't a huge amount of money to buy a decent laptop, but perhaps you should consider buying this one:
Sony VAIO AW290JQH

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 / 2.4 GHz ( Dual-Core )
RAM: 4 GB (installed) / 8 GB (max), DDR2 SDRAM, 800 MHz, PC2-6400 ( 2 x 2 GB )
Hard Drive: 320 GB, Serial ATA-150, 7200 rpm
Display: 18.4" TFT 1680 x 945
Graphics Controller: NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS, 256 MB

I know of an Acer with a great setup for around 1500$. 16'', keyboard with numpad (for all ye roguelike needs), 2.0GHz C2D Santa Rosa, 3 gigs of RAM, GF 9600M GS 512Mb, 360Gb HDD. I think that's gaming enough.

An ASUS is good too, but brands are subjective. My mom likes SONY and HP laptops, because of design. I like Acer designs and hardware, but still use an ASUS laptop. Brands are meaningless, as is their reputation - only personal experience matters. For example, I have a RoverPC communicator - Rovers are usually regarded as the worst there is on the market, but mine works great so far, and I'm happy with it.

That VAIO laptop is a nice thing if you want a media center-ish one. However, the GF9300 GS is, according to "notebookcheck" site, rather average: Modern DirectX 10 games will run only in low details and resolutions. Older DirectX 9 games, like HalfLife 2 or Far Cry run fluently in medium to high details.

Try this one: http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529668231.php
it's got a GF9800 GTS with 1gig RAM, can't get much better than this for it's price.
Or, just look at the comprehensive list of notebooks notebookcheck is reviewing:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Sorting-by-graphic-card.2674.0.html - this one's listed by GPUs, because that's what makes laptop a gaming thingie.
