Spears do not always get stuck.  There are several factors affecting stick chance, including skill, quality, and raws.  A legendary spearman can be devastating, even with a low-quality wooden spear.

In one of my forts, my best warrior is a spearman.  She's the longest lasting of them.

Truth actually. I usually don't use spearmen in the army (spears are cheap so I give them to civilians and sometimes guards) but one speardwarf immigrated and she brought her own spear .. so I let her keep it.
She served me very well. I thought she'd be at a disadvantage when facing numerous goblins but she struck at them and held them off from all sides to which I assume she swung and spun it around shaolin-style.

Awesome moment: She shoved a goblin away and he fell, she lodged the spear in the throat of a second goblin, she turned and broke the spine of a third goblin, shoved a fourth goblin away, retrieved her spear from the corpse, struck the first goblin as he had gotten up and then struck the fourth goblin as well. That day she killed about 7 gobbos in total ... before she was shot in the back by a lowly bowman and died.
