Artifact Experience
« on: April 15, 2009, 08:20:38 am »

So one of my three cooks decided he wanted to become a jewelcrafter and headed off to make an amethyst scepter which was alright I guess. The thing is, he didn't seem to gain any experience from it. He was an expert cook before and still is an expert cook. No other skills are legendary, in fact his second highest skill is skilled brewer.
Is this a bug or does Armok not like having legendary cooks?

If a person is possessed, then they are not actually the entity making the craft.  Whatever it is that is possessing them makes the craft, and then unpossesses them.  Thus they gain no experience.  All other moods (fey, secretive, fell, and macabre) result in experience.

Artifact meals aren't allowed for in the game. Simply because someone would EAT it, causing the maker to go mad.
Or it would decay, causing him to go mad.

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

If he wasn't posessed, then he'll be a legendary gem cutter.

Double-check his skills to make sure there isn't a second page. Skills are listed in the order obtained, so he could have a bunch of "Dabbling time-waster" skills ahead of the legendary one.

Toady, how much of DF is inspired by Labyrinth? Is Armok actually David Bowie? Because that would simultaneously be disturbing and awesome.

Which seems to me like it should at least net you SOME gain.  I mean, if someone was telling you...  "Ok, turn this screw, then do this, then twist this filter, then pour this in" then you'd still learn about changing an oil filter just as much as if you were suddenly overcome by an INSPIRATION to change an oil filter.

The thing is, Kohou, that the person making the item is so ridiculously not themself when in a mood, that I do not think that they are even aware of making the item.  That's why they do not eat, drink, sleep, etc until they succeed or go insane.

But that's not what this "possession" is.  A spirit inhabits the body, and the person who ~was~ there is not home any more.  When the spirit leaves, then the person wakes up - and finds themselves holding an artifact.

Kinda like waking up and finding an artifact lampshade on your head. Maybe you can't explain it, but everyone else finds it very amusing.

Or terrifying, if you happen to have made that lampshade out of PEOPLEDWARF parts..
