Each race only has one diplomat, and my understanding is that in the current version they still don't get replaced if they get killed. This is one instance where it's handy to be dealing with an elf. Or goblin. Whichever you see as the lesser of two evils (probably the goblin ::)). Neither will die of old age :)

I typically assing a soapmaker/lyemaker/other useless dorf I get in the first immigration wave as a bookkeeper. I then set the accuracy to the highest, and he locks himself up in his office (which you need to make and assign ofcourse) and is a legendary clerk the next year :)
