Killing Skills
« on: April 22, 2009, 10:44:37 pm »

For the sake of specialization and aiming for legendary dwarves, I take to disabling the labor settings of immigrants if there's already a local with the same skill(s) at an equal or higher level.  I also give each dwarf a nickname referring to his/her job in my fortress (Peasant, Jeweler, Farmer, etc.).  Is there a way to make the unit list sort by name or something, or do I just have to deal with 'Peasant' McUseless, Fisherdwarf wandering my halls hauling stuff?

Also, how far should I take specialization?  Is it better to have a dwarf as a gem cutter/gem setter, or a separate dwarf for each individual task type (excluding hauling)?

Well that depends on the task.  For gem cutters and setters, I usually have both skills to a Dwarf.  I usually make my jeweler Dwarves cut every single available gem before they start setting.  So it works out nicely.

Dangerous - sometimes a mood requires uncut gems. I found this out the hard way.

Not really, if you have glass production available.

Of course, then you're stuck with artifacts decorated with glass.

It's generally worthwhile to forbid two of each "artifactable" item type in case of moods.

As for the original question, it really depends on how streamlined you want your production to be. If you're doing a fortress dedicated to decorating things with glass, then it might be worth having one dwarf for cutting and one for setting, so the latter can decorate things while the former works. Most of the time this isn't really a big issue, though, so combining the two labors under one dwarf is fine.
