Mass Flood?
« on: April 14, 2009, 09:21:10 am »

So I kind of screwed up a bit, and am besieged by several goblin squads without any way of driving them out. Not that big a problem (although the merchants who were trapped in the fortress with me went just a teensy bit crazy), but I'm thinking of the next time this happens. Would it help if I built a massive reservoire, set several pumps with designated waterwheels and basically unleashed a grand inundation on the lands?

Oh, and in this regard... will it help me if I tame a dragon (I have 2 already... wooden cagetraps agains dragons is somewhat imbalanced...) and chained it at the entrance of the fortress?

You seem pretty talented in the "cage" department. Use that.

Ah... you see, that is exactly what I screwed up. I had filled the entire entrance with those, but things started getting boring, so I decided to remove all but 20 of them, and place some weapon traps. And in the exact interval between clearing the old ones and placing weapon traps, arrived the goblins. And because the entire entry hallway of the fortress is open space - I channeled the roof to prevent accidental casualties, my dwarves can't go there and place weapon traps. I might replace them next time, but still, would any of the ideas in my original post work?

Weapon traps require weapons. Thus you must have some way of stabbing the things outside your walls.

Or just trap the area underground near you entrance and let them in.

Or channel underneath them for a much-needed pit trap.

No no no, you guys misunderstand me :) I'm not having (that big of a) problem with the current siege. I'm just wondering what I can do about the future, preferably while simultaniously creating a mass apocalypse. Too bad there isn't a magma pipe at my current location, or else I'd know what to do  8)

edit : In fact they just left... I guess my fortress isn't that interesting from the outside.

You want it to be interesting? ok .. lure them inside the main hall where all your dorfs are and flood that.

Remember: Water has difficulties spreading across the landscape without being dried up in the process. You will need a pressure tank several z-levels high, or just a pump tower that takes water from a cistern before dumping it down a narrow shaft next to the pump tower that leads to the floodplain.

Also, keep any dragons you have around a corner as to keep ranged weapons out of it's internal organs.

Dragons breed, don't they? Are they a mating pair? Dragon babies seem like a great way to introduce your besiegers to a flood... of fire! :D
Chain them up and let them breed!

Cancel, I like the idea  :) One more question, though - one of them actually killed quite a lot of my dwarves, and the wiki says I can't successfully tame him then, only make him an unpunishable dwarfslayer. Will chaining him prevent him from incinerating my own dwarves?

Dragons don't breed.

If I recall correctly, a "tamed" creature that has killed dwarves will be treated as tame by everyone involved (i.e. dwarves aren't frightened by it), but it will occasionally decide to attack an allied unit. Chaining the dragon won't help because they have ranged weaponry.

You could just stick his cage out front a ways and hook it up to a lever then let him out as the goblins pass and the ones up front are starting to deal with other stuff.
