Why no Cliffs?
« on: April 15, 2009, 05:55:34 pm »

In every site ive been on, I've never seen an actual cliff. Even after turning off the periodically erode extreme cliffs. All I find are very steep slopes. Does DF just not gen them?

I think erode steep slows just makes it guarantee up and down ramps next to each other- without it on I've seen some cliffs too steep for both but only for short spaces, there's usually a pretty easy path up.

Yeah, there aren't any cliffs, usually. Back in the old days of 3d cliffs were every where. Gently rolling hills were a collection of steppes. Mountains were giant plateaus stacked on top of each other. The plains, fortunately, had ramps.

Though if you're aching for cliffs, I find that lakes adjacent to mountains are pretty easy to find, and the lake for some reason cuts sharp cliffs out of the mountain slope. You can get very large amounts of z-levels using this method as well.

You're playing dwarf fortress. Carve your own.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

You can mess around with your world gen parameters to increase the chances of having mountains drop down to lakes or beaches/ ocean region tiles.

Set the elevation variance to 1600 and 1600, have 800 starting rivers and make your erode cycle 0. Turn off all rejections, ect. You get a world gen that is a jumbled mess of mountains and small oceans and all the elevations in between all clumped together like that.

I genned a few sites with 20+ sheer cliff faces that way.
