[40c] woodcutter seeks her dead baby
« on: March 04, 2009, 11:34:21 am »

DFFD.

Solon, my woodcutter, was ambushed in a narrow passage (down 1 z-level and a bit south of where the save saved).  The baby took the axe meant for her, so while she slaughtered everything, the baby is quite dead.  By the time of this save, the baby has been buried.  But Solon has a "seek infant" job to visit the spot where baby died.

I assume it's a bug, but it might instead be an impossibly touching feature.

I remember I had a war dog who would constantly visit the place where her master died in a cave in.

I can flood my main hall with magma and chuckle at it, but that sight made me want to cry ;_;

Odd how "Experiment" in DF is often synonymous with "Raging inferno of death and dispair"

I had one that always hung out where his master got accidentally skewered by ballista friendly fire.  Always made me feel like a douchebag.

So, yeah.
Touching feature, not bug.
Mourning the loss.

1 life is a tragedy.

1,000,000 lives are a statistic.

I'm gonna call it a bug, but a very touching one.

Saw something similar tonight by accident.

I had been wondering why some dwarves were hanging around my barracks by a recovering dwarf either "On break" or with no job, since the barracks is not a dining room, meeting hall, statue, garden, zoo, or anything of that sort for about three Z-levels and 20 X-squares.  Eventually I shrugged it off and went about my business.

Later on I spotted a dwarf with the flashing red down arrow and inspected his profile. "Lost a sibling to tragedy lately." So, wondering who the sibling was, I pull up the relationship profile.  Turns out it was the son of my (female) mayor, who has been a baby factory.  So I think, "oh, I didn't know the dwarf in the 'Remove construction' tower accident was the mayor's." (Poor dwarf fell 5 Z-levels and, with a mangled heart, was not long for that world.)

After a few seconds it hit me: my mayor, the unhappy dwarf's mother and the other injury in the accident, was recovering in the barracks, which meant those (adult) dwarves inexplicably "On break" or "No job" around her were...  A quick profile check later confirmed: those three dwarves hanging around my barracks for no reason were actually idling around their wounded mother.

Wow.

You sure that's not part of the 'attend meeting' oddness that crops up occasionally? They might be waiting for her to get better so they can cry on her shoulder.

Bugs or not, I believe these SHOULD be features.  DF makes an amazing narrative all on it's own at times, things like this only add to the magic.
