Families immigrating to your fortress
« on: October 18, 2009, 05:04:15 am »

(I read the Dev notes and did a search on this subject, families is brought up, but not exactly in this light.  I swear I did my homework! :()

So, I was fooling around in adventurer mode and ran into some dwarves that belonged to a fortress I abandoned.  I talked with 'em and discovered, to my horror, none of them had family!  Of course this is probably an upcoming change, but I think it can be extended further.  In fortress mode, dwarves are parts of certain social orders apparently (the "Honorable Paddle" seems to be a common one in my best fortress) which I think refers to the fortress they are from, but if we can generate families for these guys, how about having living family members also migrate from their home fortress to your fortress in addition to the totally random dwarves from nowhere?  Or, maybe when the dwarf economy gets fixed, then a dwarf could pay for the passage of their family with the money they make, adding happy thoughts and extra, useful dwarves later on when you don't get normal migrants anymore.

Yes currently I do believe that dwarves are generated as opposed to them travelling, this will be changed.

Are you talking about other relatives coming to the fortress in separate migration waves?  If so, I like that idea.  Sounds like even more tantrum spiral fuel :D

I've never tried it and there's a good chance it could make them freak out.

I think the "Honorable Paddle" might just be your civ - or else your starting group, if you didn't name them something else, since I've never heard of any other kind of social order.

Found the answer in my Civilization screen, the "Honorable Paddle" is the translated name of the former dwarven capitol (current capitol being my fortress ^_^).  So yeah, once a world is generated and family trees are set up, fortress mode could select seven random dwarves from different dwarf (or even human, elf, or goblin?) towns instead of generating seven new ones, allowing a sort of random chance that they have relatives or even friends who may want to join your dwarves at your fortress someday.

In my "Clan" suggestion I proposed something similar, with the the starting 7 forming a clan which can grow over time.  Migrants would at first be somewhat low skill clan less dwarves and gradually move towards being more 'up-scale' noble clans that are relocating to the seat of power.

The difference being that clans are bigger 'supra' families so a clan migration might contain a few married couples, children and assorted relatives but not everyone needs to be related directly only loosely.

I'm of course all for clans being a named and 'permanent' entity separate from the individuals it contains, its necessary for some of the concepts like clan-2-clan relationships (grudges & alliances) and 'Honor' that determines the nobility of a clan.
