Dwarven and goblin towns/settlement symbols come in different colors the darker representing a lower pop settlement. Human (white) and elves (yellow) have different symbols depending on size. Elves have the cottage symbol for low pop settlements

Crowns on the map means ruins, a town destroyed during worldgen.

Also the ASCII map legend is handy for Mayday since much of the map symbols are similar

There is actually a really easy solution: set a standard ascii tileset for windowed mode, and keep the Mayday tileset for fullscreen. Then, when you generate a world, or need the full ascii for whatever reason, hit F11.
