Aren't cage-escapes (at least by hostiles, not sure about dwarves) going to be implemented in the next version?  I thought I read something about that in the FOTF thread or the devnotes.

A smooth walled pit that goes down like, 2 levels! They'd have to be really tall to get out of that!

Fill the pit with magma.

... and all of a sudden we find a situation when climbable enemies could actually be used.

On an unrelated note. Shouldn't Antmen be able to climb walls? Just saying ... oh and it's nice too see the resurrected corpse of my thread walking around. Seems to be alot of zombies these days.

Hm, I like this jailbreak idea....fortress guards would be much more needed if this feature would get implemented, not to mention that it would be fun to watch the guards as they are chasing around the escaped midgets.  ;D

They already have a system for that. Cages can't contain water you silly.. aquariums work though. I built one lone ago and captured a fish.. strangest thing. The fish disappeared so I caught another. That one disappeared as well.

Either it bugged or the cat took them. Never investigated it further.
Dwarves like to eat vermin from time to time (even being able to subsist on nothing but vermin) and will pluck them right out of cages to gobble on the spot.

Scratch "from time to time". If you have captured a vermin creature, pretty much the next dwarf to get hungry will eat it.

My brother told me they eat vermin they like, a dwarf who "absolutely detests rats" won't gobble up a rat if it's available.

I had some trouble with a silk farm just recently because of these things. First I had to capture cave spiders (easy. place the trap stockpile in their cave, dorfs capture the vermin closest to the traps) and then I had to tame them ... but they can't be tamed.
A dorf sweeped in and ate one of the cave spiders. The other I threw in a pit in a locked room.. it crawled out and started producing web, pretty neat.. but the cats waited patiently outside the door and once the weaver went in so did the cat.

Just to piss me off the cat left the dead spider in MY MAYORS BED where it rotted and filled her room with miasma.
