cold biome + underground river questions

In the unit list, the list of "deceased" undead which would go into the river keeps growing.

Are they spawning in a frozen river and instagibbing?

Or does the river kill them in some other way?

I havent dug into it yet btw

It means that some of the underground critters are falling into the chasm that comes with the underground river.

Your aboveground climate has nothing to do with it.
