As a sort of dwarf-portable bin, baskets would be used by haulers to take multiple items from one place to another. Stores could also use them (or merchants that go around selling to dwarves on the "street" as it is). As hauling gets smarter, dwarves could load up a bunch of items that need to go somewhere from someplace close by, and go from stockpile to stockpile, so Urist Hauler can now carry two stones, an animal trap, and +goblin bone bolts+ from a workshop over to the stone, animal, and ammo stockpiles respectively, if the workshops that made these items were close together and the stockpiles were clustered relatively close together. This would also promote keeping storage tightly clustered and ordered.

When dwarves want to commit suicide, then by Armok, they _will_ commit suicide, even if they have to spend the rest of their lives working at it!

Believe it or not, that concept has been suggested many dozens of times. Please use search next time.
