Animal pens
« on: April 05, 2009, 02:43:26 pm »

Anyone got any builds for it, i had this...

level 1
           ^....
           ......
           ......
           ......
Level 2
          ooooo
          o.''''''o
          o.''''''o
          o.''''''o
          o.''''''o
          o=ooo

^ramp
' drop
o wall
= door

with the second level drop put as pit, and adding the animals.

Im thinking of taking the ramp away and putting stairs.

Prob is they dont stay there, they all bunch up by the doors instead of the pen.

i had one before like this

'
'
'
'

and they just sat down there in a line-pit with each other battery farm style (currently the best way IMHO)

If you have the door set to tightly closed rather than forbidden, they'll think they can walk through it, and thus tend to bunch up around the door (not to mention generating lots of FPS-killing pathfinding errors). Forbidding it should take care of it (though obviously you'll have to switch to just tightly closed to get dwarves in/out for slaughtering, caging, etc.)

If you have a wood log then you have the materials to construct a cage.

Set a meeting zone inside the pen. That's where they're trying to go.

-or-

Use ropes to tie them inside.

Nice idea ill try it, meeting area is good idea too.

No point commenting on cages as i stated in the first post, im not making 50 cages anytime soon.

You don't need 50 cages, though - just one will hold an infinite number of creatures. The only reason to build more for livestock is for the look of it.
