I would like buildable totems, treat them like statues with a touch of likes/dislikes thrown in. Actually, that could be cool for statues too, make dwarves react to what the statue looks like, some dwarves like being in a room filled with monstrous statues, while others are creeped out. Some like a Statue garden filled with inspiring images of dwarven heroes, others find it pretentious... But Totems would mostly be cheap statues, with a few side effects, like maybe a tiny chance of a creature who sees a totem from its own race going berserk or trancing. Also larger sieges would be a nice side effect, and/or raids to recover relatives' remains. Maybe as your fortress' appearance becomes more macabre, your fortress could become more aligned with violent communities, and less popular amongst the tidier communities...

If your enemies are superstitious, or squeamish, the totems might affect them. Maybe not a lot, depending on their personalities and states of mind. Morale should definitely be a factor in military situations, though--especially when you're talking a seige, where everybody's just sitting around with nothing to do but get aggravated that they're still just sitting around.

And little things like a bunch of skulls-on-a-stick can really add up, over time.

If you start sticking the heads of people they already *know* up on poles, yeah it could really piss them off, at first, but after a few dozen of their best buddies get the stick, they really just might want to go home.

Just the fact that you're willing to/capable of, putting a couple hundred heads on sticks around your lands should atleast send a certain message to your enemies. Maybe not send them packing, but definitely be cause for a little introspection.

That, and they make nice conversation pieces.

I think depending on their religions and superstitions that totems could be exceptionally effective.

There is some religion, or maybe it's more than one, cant remember... Where if they touch any unclean animal they will not go to heaven and instead be condemned to burn in the fiery pits of hell.   People have threatened members of this religion that if they do not do as they are told they will be buried with dead pigs next to them and therefore never being able to enter heaven.

Now I am not sure that if goblins saw their old buddies with bacon on their heads they would be any less likely to strike, but perhaps they have a similar thing like maybe a fear of silver piercing the nose will forever hold the soul to the earth or something and make them afraid of assaulting such a fortress.

"She was disgusted by a purring maggot statue lately."

A few days locked in that room, and she'll love Big Brother.
