Dwarves and Books -- a new idea
« on: April 04, 2009, 04:23:09 pm »

Hi all,

I've been a lurker for a long time here, mainly enjoying the threads and anxiously awaiting the latest version.  The other day I started a new fortress and it received the random name "Bookcloisters."  This got me thinking...

What about a Dwarven book industry?

Imagine it this way:  two new nobles are created, the Historian and the Poet.  These two nobles, along with the already-existing Philosopher, will sometimes be taken with the urge (something like a fey mood) to write a book.  Writing the book requires a long time, and its ultimate value is based on two things:  the worth of the physical materials used in the creation of the copy itself, but also the worth of other books consulted in the composition of the new tome.

Other books--that's right.  There will be other books in circulation as trade goods, valued according to their materials and their contents.  Books might be of three classes (poetry, philosophy, and history) depending on who wrote them, and these classes would also determine their appeal to various trading partners.  Elves dig poetry, humans thirst for philosophy, and other dwarves, of course, seek glorious accounts of the glorious doings of the glorious dwarves.

While these nobles produce books, other (non-noble) dwarves--call them scribes--could be given the task of creating copies.  Novice scribes produce cheap paperback editions, but expert scribes produce elaborate, multivolume, precious-leather-bound editions studded with jewels and etc.  Perhaps a truly gifted scribe might someday pass to the status of author itself.

The neat thing for the player would be opening the books' descriptions:  this could be a place where (as with engravings) the detailed and rich history under the game's hood world could be revealed further.  Obviously, new programming would be necessary for selecting and combining the elements of history (and maybe even relating them to current events in the player's fortress), but Toady's history engine seems designed for just this kind of thing.

Books could be a neat addition to the DF economy.  Since new books take values from the books already owned by the fortress, there is an incentive to amass a library.  And libraries would have to be protected:  kobolds steal books (the covers are shiny), while goblins launch crusades to destroy heretical volumes.  Perhaps heresy could be bigger than that:  possession of books offensive to a certain civilization could cause problems with trading unless the offending book is handed over.

Perhaps some books could even call down certain powerful enemies... Necronomicon, anyone?

Anyway, this idea came to me in a single flash, but it seems to make sense.  Perhaps it has already been discussed.  What do people think?

First, wrong place, second, a new suggestion that have already been suggested like 9812639162812481264812502749126471003 times and yet you people keep suggesting it. You didnt even bothered to search.
Third, if YOu would bother to actually read dev plans, You would find it is already planned.

As has been said, this has been suggested a ton of times, but I'll use this opportunity to throw in my own ideas.
A good idea would be for dwarves to only know the history of their own civilisation. At first, only this can be used in writings, engravings, decorations, etc. To learn about other civilisations, and thus be able to use their histories in creations/engravings, you must buy books from caravans. Books would be traded around and be of a few different types, for example, Histories would chronicle an entire civilisation, Biographies would be about one being, etc.
It would be nice to create The Complete and Accurate History of The Attic of Wetting, and be able to trade it for The Decline and Fall of the Council of Cereal, from which your dwarves would be able to engrave great scenes from the Council of Cereal's final battles.

Many apologies for sharing my enthusiasm, ill-informed as it was.

To the actual developers:  thanks for a terrific game!

Rather than the rude, acerbic response given previously, I would recommend actually advising on where and how to do such things.  Perhaps some people are born with all the knowledge of message board systems fully-formed in their heads like Athena from Zeus, but the rest of us actually need to learn, and being scolded for trying to learn is rather unpleasant.
So first: "While your idea has interest and merit, it would be better placed under the DF Suggestions forum."
Second: "However, a cursory review of that board with the Search function on either bar will reward several results, as this idea has been presented many times before."
Third: "Additionally, by reading the Development Plans (reviewable at http://bay12games.com/dwarves/dev.html ), you will find that books are already planned (in Core100)."

Wasn't that so much better and more informative than insulting people and trying to dampen their enthusiasm? ^.^

first:  Welcome, Paul Roberts!  Your ideas are valued and appreciated.  Yes, you made a minor faux paux concerning which board you posted in, but nobody should call you onto the carpet for it callously.  Please, keep contributing.

--------------------------------
I have said it before and i will say it again.  it is perfectly acceptable to bring back old ideas.  If someone ressurected an old thread, they would get bashed.  If they start a new topic on the idea, they would get bashed (as witnessed above).  If you dont like the topic, please dont respond.  trolls can go play in various nonsense and the other forums (where i usually post - cuz i can tend to troll).  please leave DF boards to the purity of the game.

Also, just cuz there is a dev note doesnt mean stop talking about it.  We should all talk about everything we want to see in the game till:
a.  we die
b.  Toady One says, NO!
c.  Toady One implements some form of it and moves on.

:)

-------------------------
for those who want to know:

Core100, NEW LANGUAGE ITEMS, (Future): Parchment, vellum and their buddies then books, songs, poems... all for your entertainment (and horror, if there are random poems). Requires Core99
