simple optimization

I just thought maybe df could be distributed as optimized binaries for higher end processors.(and maybe it would be a little boost if it was 64bit compiled?)

I think Toady would probably reject this idea.  Here's my attempt at his reasoning: the work of compiling each specific version of the game would greatly increase his workload whenever a new release was issued. Also, as an alpha, it's wasteful to add optimizations to the code which may, in a later version, need to be changed or removed.

Traditionally, the way one asks an independent programmer for a port to a new system is to buy him one of those systems for testing purposes.

Actually, no, Traditionally the programmer has one of his friends compile it on a 64bit system. Thats how its been going for the past 10 years that i've been programming  :)
