That image, and the implications surrounding it, have been discussed before.  General consensus:  There is none.  Some (including myself) think that the image is misleading by only showing a scene that is incredibly easy to render in that way, ignoring all the complications that would exist in a typical DF setting.  Others attempt to propose solutions or compromises to alleviate the complications.  And then there is the fact that Toady doesn't seem particularly interested in spending a bunch of time on graphics coding to simply make the game prettier.
