Right, so. I had a bunch of small animals come in with the elven caravans(mostly because I was buying cages and didn't notice they had critters in them until afterward). I decided to make the best of it, and made them pet available.

One has, so far as I can tell, been adopted, but there's a problem: the message I put in the title(with name filled in of course) keeps being repeated. He never completes the "Recover Pet" task. At first, there was also a message about someone ELSE cancelling "Small Animal Caging", so, thinking that to be the problem, I found the named cardinal and unassigned it from the cage.

No dice.

Any thoughts on how I can get the spam to stop? Preferably, but not necessarily, by giving the dwarf his accursed cardinal?

EDIT: It turns out that the cardinal is not still in the cage. The cardinal is presumably flying somewhere, blissfully unaware of the stupid engineer lumbering in its general direction. Is there any way for me to shut the guy up? Maybe try to kill the bloody bird and carve a giant statue of it in consolation?

Vermin can't be killed, at least by traditional methods. You might just have to tolerate it until the guy actually catches it. Try assigning it to a cage again, after all, two dwarfs wildly jumping around trying to catch a bird is better than one. Once in the cage, the inaccessible spam should stop.

Alternatively, kill the guy, you cruel, cruel bastard. He was just trying to get his pet!

I had this problem. It was fixed by building all my cages, finding the bird and unassigning it. The owner then came to fetch it
