Gah, of course. I'd almost forgotten what it was like being unfamiliar with the mechanics of the game. I recall my most disastrous "fun" coming from my first attempt at a sewer system, before I realised that water could flow up. Needless to say, many dwarves became martyrs for science.
i wish there was some 'i told you i was hardcore mode'. like 'uh-oh, suddenly magma pipe starts erupting and flooding half your fortress, in your face, player!'. it's just too easy to make everything safe once you know what's up.

Wow, I used Derakon's seed to get this:

Could it get any better than that? Then again the goblins are still friendly, so there ain't much point in having it like this.

That reminds me, the site I found earlier would probably go down well for some of the people here.

In addition to the listed rock layers, the non-mountainous area has black sand. It's a calm freshwater marsh.

Edit: Re: the OP: to get your worldgen parameters, hit Escape, then choose to export images, then hit 'e'. Along with the images, parameters for your world will be created; just paste them here, preferably inside spoiler tags like I did. It's also helpful to include a screenshot of the embark location so people don't have to find it themselves.
I know it's a bit late to say this, but lok closely at eh region name, some newbies are gonna be offended by this.
Some others will think it's awesome.
Let's record their reaction and laugh.

If the OP's area has HFS, then there is definitely plenty of fun to be had.

Presently for me, military management tends to get in the way of my megaprojects.  I usually fill my entryway with cage traps and don't worry about it.

Last fortress, I tried to get a goblin breeding program up to train my soldiers on.

Yes, actually, I am trying to get myself banned.  I wish Toady would quit working on this worthless piece of junk and go back to teaching math.
