I agree that megabeasts are too weak-even after just my first encounter.  So an unwounded hydra walks up to my fortress and kills a few war dogs quite brutally.  I start to mobilize my military, starting with my marksdwarves....only to find my elite marksdwarf downing the hydra with three iron bolts.  I don't quite understand how it could be that weak if it's unwounded from worldgen.  Someone should really fix that.

Anyway, I figure that the dwarves are only marginally less wasteful of metal than they are of wood. The moody dwarf's selecting only the best 5% of each bar of metal, and eats the rest to sustain him as he works on the artifact.

Marksdwarves are pretty much the bane of most megabeasts, with good reason, a team of archers can take out pretty much any idividual. So how many elite marksdwarves do you think it should take to bring down a hydra in open terrain?

I shall be eternally happy. I shall be able to construct elf hunting giant mecha. Which can pour magma.
Urist has been forced to use a friend as fertilizer lately.
