I think that proposal is so that if you have twelve levers that need to be pulled for your mighty deathtrap to go off correctly, then you could say, "keep a minimum of four dwarves in this room at all times ready to pull levers".

Is it already requested somewhere to link (several) levers to a lever? That would offer another solution to make stuff happen simultaneously.

Why not just link all that stuff to one lever?  Seems much easier.

That way, you can still activate a part of the system while retaining the benefits of a master lever. Also, since every single lever causes a delay (or better, will have a modifiable delay setting) there are very interesting things to do with timing... it would even be possible to link a chain of levers circularly, for some kind of clock that activates contraptions rhythmically.  Maybe it's better done with gear assemblies. Some kind of power would need to be inserted to keep the circle going, of course, but for now we just need to see what we can do with it.

While I certainly like the idea, I just wanted to share a workaround I find useful.

If you add a number of dummy levers that do nothing to your control room, you can set these to repeat pull to attract dwarves to be in the room when they are needed. When one of the real levers needs pulling, suspend the dummy lever pulling and there is instantly an idle dwarf available.

Its somewhat more dwarf-friendly than just locking a bunch of recruits in there as there is no initial unhappy drafting thought and the dwarves manning the station can go off-duty and be replaced as necessary. (Although I will still have doors to make sure the dwarves dont choose to do some other task when the critical lever needs pulling)

Effectively, at the cost of a few extra levers, you get much of what this suggestion is aiming at.

Yeah I am aware there are ways to get a similar effect with drafting and locked room, but its tiedious and annoying to do. Plus manned switch would let me do a proper command room for my spaceship  ;D

Good idea. Maybe it could also be broadened even more, something like a sort of 'yellow alert' status for the fort: that you could designate levers to fall under a standby category, so that when you set the fort to standby all those designated levers would get manned. That would be useful if your fort has many individual lever systems, and save time because you wouldn't need to change the status of each lever individually each time.

I realize this is somewhat like the designating a minimum number of idle dwarves to a room that was mentioned earlier in this thread, but this would also work if not all your levers are in the same room.

Actually I think Toady may be able to implement manning lever as such.  It would be identical to setting a lever on repeat "Pull Lever" task, but instead call it something like "Touch Lever" and put it on repeat.  So the dwarf stays there constantly completing the "task" of touching the lever, but never activating it.  And when you need it actually pulled, simply append a "Pull Lever" task.
