Volcanic glacier
« on: March 25, 2009, 07:41:48 pm »

How can that even exist?

Because my latest gen'd world has a volcano in a glacier region. Should I expect massive flooding and doom if I embark there?

Should be fine. Unless it erupts... then the obsidian would floooow.

The volcano's always surrounded by a thick layer of obsidian, so its heat won't come close to the ice unless you interfere.

It all melted the ice, then exploded into steam, turning into obsidian.  Before you got there.

Alright, embarked. Trying to figure out how I want to lay this out (especially since I'm not quite sure where the aquifer is, just that there is one.)

Also a bit annoyed that my trade depot melted as soon as I built it. A jet and ice trade depot sounded awesome. :(

Two years in, so far so good, although the fort nearly starved to death before I got the farm up and running. I managed to kill my original two miners in a cave-in though while trying to make an area to farm outdoor plants... oops.

No sign of goblins or orcs yet. :(

Glacier + magma pipe is awesome. One of my most successful fortresses was located on a glacier with easy access to magma: I thawed out a nearby brook and two large (lake-sized) ponds.

I... sort of miss that fort :|

There are tons of glaciers with magma. Just gen a world and look around the glaciers; there's almost always several magma vents/pipes per large glacial area.

That's normal? Huh. I learned something today.

Here's the seed anyway. I can't guarantee it'll gen the same without the mineral mod (also, the history seed'll still get different results since I have new races and megabeasts in there), but the temperature settings I used do tend to produce some nice glaciers.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My location's in the far upper left corner of the map. It took a couple years for elven and human caravans to arrive.

Was going to say, I thought volcanoes and glaciers went together like California and earthquakes.

or volcanoes and geysers...
