Most of my forts these days start with a grand design in mind.

I either make progress or drop it for a better idea.

I plan as much stuff out before hand as I can, because things turn to shit when I do it off the cuff.

I usually dig down right in front of the wagon and get a temporary "Shelter fortress" started, while making the mini fortress I start looking for a good spot to build the real fortress.

I usually prefer areas like Valleys, where I can turn the hills into cliffs and build a gate to create a walled in fortress. Then I eventually add towers and other nice stuff.
