have a few dwarves who are using weapons in their right hands while also holding helms with the same right hands.

it seems like there isnt a problem using the weapons, their skills are going up.  so are the helms acting as something like a gauntlet?  anyone else encounter this?  not a big problem but it does look odd when checking their inventory.

They took the helms from the other dwarves while they trained wresting. For example Dwarf A grabbed Dwarf B by helm, Dwarf B moved away, Dwarf A stayed with the helm in his hand. Happens with various parts of clothing / armor.
It can become dangerous and your dwarves can hurt each other, when instead wrestling, they are hitting each other with +Steel Helm+'s...

but what i am wondering is, will the dwarf use the hammer in his hand as a weapon, or the helm?  they are both being held in the same hand.

I think they will prefer to use that item as a weapon rather than their actual weapon, which is why wrestling crossbow dwarves have problems.

You can fix it by ordering the offending item to be dumped. Another dwarf will remove it and take it to the zone designated for dumping. Make sure that if you're dumping into a chasm you have a failsafe, such as a retractable bridge a Z level below the dump zone so you can catch things you want to save.

thanks for the advice.  dumped the helms (and also some armor apparently)

what is the problem with wrestling crossbow dwarves?  i have got all my future marksdwarves as skilled wrestlers currently.

If they wrestle they'll probably end up holding someone else's clothes. And because they're holding the underpants they ripped off someone else, they cannot also carry bolts. So they'll pick up the crossbow, but instead of bolts they'll also carry those underpants.
