All was going well in my fortress and another one of the mayor's mandates has been ignored.

a couple minutes later I see this:

and then the mayor's wife is dragged out to her tomb by the mayor himself.

It's interesting to see that every single one of my dwarfs are still ecstatic and happy as ever. and that the crime was ignored by the guards I have, even more interesting that the wife's punishment was reduced from death to death.

I know that the killing is normal, but the fact that the punishment was "reduced" somehow, and that the mayor felt bad that he was not punished.

Are you positive it was the mayor that killed her?  It's more likely that the Guard carried out the punishment, and the Mayor just happened to get the burial duty.

Yes it was the mayor that killed her, they where the only two dwarfs in the mechanics workplace room ( I tend to keep my workshops apart from eachother)

Do you happen to have anything bizarre like the Mayor doing double duty as Sheriff or Captain of the Guard?  I don't even know if it lets you do that.

Nope, I guess he was just really angry or something. Not that anything phases any of my dwarfs, I recently lost 14 dwarfs to a flood accident (Pulled the wrong lever) and everyone is still ecstatic as ever. Dwarf manager tells me that the lowest "happy" level is 200.

I also have a dwarf hammer man (Merchant guard) sitting on the side of my map, he has been there for 6 years now.

Last I checked there isn't a Magna Carta. Above the law?  They *are* the law.

No the "LAW" is that lever in the farthest reaches of my fortress that seals the front gate and proceeds to flood my entire fortress with water AND magma in alternating levels Buhahaha

Maybe he felt guilty?
