Economy isn't causing the issue, since I disabled that garbage before even starting the fort.

My soldiers all have their own rooms, since I don't use squads and the now-extinct goblin civ is no longer a threat.

I give children beds the moment they're born, literally.  It's one benefit of having no economy.

Since I've seen both the husband and the wife (at different times) sleeping in the barracks, I'm thinking the horde of children is causing the problem.  Since young kids are velchroed to their parents, I'm thinking that they are refusing to use their own rooms, and only two members of the same family can be on a bed at once.  I'll try sticking two more beds in the room to see if that fixes the problem (looks like they get a free upgrade to the deluxe family suites).
